Meet the Ban1080 Party Candidates
Clyde Graf – Candidate for Coromandel electorate – Email: firstname.lastname@example.org
Clyde Graf has been involved with filming and documenting 1080 poisoning operations across New Zealand since 2006. In 2009 Clyde and his brother Steve released their second documentary called Poisoning Paradise. National television stations continue to refuse to air the documentary despite the film winning multiple international environmental awards. The brothers have since released over 20 videos highlighting the impacts and dangers of broad-scale, aerially spread 1080 poison. All films can be viewed on The Graf Boys YouTube channel.
In 2013 Clyde was elected the Thames-Coromandel Waikato Regional Council representative, and has since pursued political avenues. Clyde continues to film, document and raise awareness about the social, economic and environmental consequences of the increasing number of aerial 1080 poisoning operations taking place across New Zealand’s forests and waterways.
Pete Salter – candidate for West Coast-Tasman electorate.
I live in the small West Coast town of Pukekura. For 40 years I have worked as a commercial possum trapper and venison hunter. I have also worked with tourists for the last 35 years and have seen their disgust when they discover we use this poison in NZ. I have witnessed first-hand the systematic loss of our native birdlife as a result of the continued use of 1080. I have been a passionate advocate for the ban 1080 movement for a long time, and am proud to be standing for the Ban 1080 Party, to have an opportunity to take this issue to the polls.
Work experience of interest:
· Business man
· Possum hunter
Brian Adams – candidate for Southland/Clutha electorate – Email: email@example.com
After leaving school Brian became a deer culler for the New Zealand Forest Service then became a full time possum trapper in the 1970’s and 80’s. In 1986 Brian gained his commercial helicopter licence and commenced aerial shooting of deer until 1989 when he switched careers to become an airline pilot, first in New Zealand then overseas. In 2002 he retired from airline flying and moved to Central Otago where he took up possum trapping again which lead to him building a shop in Haast in 2005 that specialized in selling possum skin and merino possum products.
This was also the time when the Department of Conservation ramped up their use of Compound 1080 and over the next 12 years Brian noticed a serious decline in native bird numbers in the region. It was clear that using 1080 was not increasing bird numbers in the region regardless of what DoC was telling people. He was also concerned that the propaganda regarding possums and their destruction of the bush and native birds was not reflected in the reality of what people working in the bush full time were seeing. 1080 is an inhumane eco-toxin that continues to kill non targeted species.
